Nothing To Envy
People suspected that railroad workers burned mail to keep them warm during the cold winter. Everyone was broke in Chong Jin especially teachers they didn’t get paid over a year. The people in North Korea learned how to walk past dead bodies. North Koreans couldn’t have any contact with the outside world. On the radio, tv, and papers it would mostly talk about the president and how great the country is. Mrs. Sung would make tofu, soups, or stew. 12 million people died and finally the famine ends because enough people die. Mrs. Sung sells pigs, showed buy corn instead of penicillin.
Nothing to Envy
Mi-ran wondered if the children were going to school for the free lunch. They gave children soup for lunch. Mi-ran uniform for teaching was a white blouse she would keep it pressed under her mattress. Children would come to school with hand-me-down clothes. The children would layer their clothing because there was no heating in the school. The children that was 5 to 6 years old looked no bigger than 3-4 years old. Children were taught to love their leadership and to hate the enemy. Teachers were ordered to grow corn they were given a small piece of land. They fed the kids because they weren't receiving enough calories.
Nothing To Envy
Kim Ji-eun at the age of 7 she became a member of the young pioneers. When she turned 13 she graduated to the socialist youth league. She was a very good student, during the mid school  years she picked out of her class to attend a medical school. At the age of 16 she entered Chong Jin University Medical School. Kim started her apprenticeship at Province Peoples Hospital. Doctors are expected to serve the people selflessly. At times there is a shortage on x-ray machines so they have to use another machine that exposes them to high levels of radiation. Being a doctor in North Korea you have to make your own medicine. Doctors are required to collect herbs, they have to reach a certain quota.
Nothing To Envy
Mrs. Song was watching television and she noticed that the anchorman was dressed in all black. Mrs. Song screamed out “how are we going to live. What are we going to do without our marshall”. Mrs. Song oldest daughter Oak-hee showed no tears, she was more concern about her being hungry. When Kim Il Sung passed away people were banging their heads against walls. The older Korean people had heart attacks and strokes. Many people killed themselves by jumping off the top of buildings. The power got passed down to his son and his son is even worse then him.

Persepolis
On 1982 in July Marjane was at her aunts house she got to see her uncle Taher. Uncle Taher sent his son to Holland before the borders closed. According to Marjane the borders were closed for three years between 1980 and 1983. Marjane uncle Taher had gone through two heart attacks he still continued to smoke cigarettes. Taher ended up in the hospital from a third heart attack. Taher needed open heart surgery, they needed to send him to England but he needed permission to get a passport. Marjane aunt went to the health ministry and the man that was helping her was very religious. Marjane aunt knew the man he used to be her former window cleaner, she explained to him about her husbands situation and the man responded with “we’ll do our best. If god wills it, he’ll get better. Everything depends on god”. Marjane got very upset. Marjane and her father Ebi went to see a friend of her uncle Anoosh named Khosro. Khosro made fake passports since they shut down his company. Khosro told Ebi that he had made a fake passport for his brother to flee to Sweden to seek out political asylum. Khosro had taken in a communist named Niloufar. The government was looking for her. Khosro and Ebi agreed on a price for the passports, Khosro said he could make it in five days. Marjane uncle Taher wish was to see his son one last time. A few days later Niloufar was spotted and arrested. In Iran they have a law that women can’t die virgins and Nilofar was a virgin. Before her execution she was raped. They raided Khosro house he escaped and later met with his brother in Sweden to find political asylum. Khosro never got to make the passport. According to Marjane “three weeks after these events, uncle Taher was buried. His real passport arrive the same day. He never got to see his son”.

Nothing to Envy
When Mrs.Sung family members died she didn't have time to mourn for her son, husband, and mother in law. It's sad because she couldn't have a proper funeral or ceremony for her families death.
